I woke up to about an inch of snow, again -- but it was still snowing hard.  By the time I left for work at 12:09pm, there was a winter weather advisory -- we're supposed to get 2-4 inches of snow today.  It was snowing during my drive, tho' it had let up alot by the time I got to work (which is south of town, so that probably had something to do with it).
I had to get my grades in today by 6pm, so I was a wreck -- trying to get everything done.  All but one of my networking students passed (whoo -hoo) which is good, considering three were failing going into the final exam and project.  My networking students also did fairly well on the final.
The XP class, OTOH, was a mess.  Two students didn't even show up for the final.  (One of them went from a B to failing because she didn't show up, didn't call, didn't email and didn't contact me, my chair, or the school at all).  The other one was a pertutual screw-up so that was no surprise.  For that class, they have to do a individual project which they are given as a practical final exam -- it's basically a list of things to do (such as set a screensaver with password protect), which I then grade -- there's a point scale for each item.  Of course, I have to score EACH person, on EACH item as they do it.  And I was running around trying to score the exams of 26 students all *screaming* at me for attention -- and I'm doing the best I can but no one's being patient.  It was AWFUL!  Finally, the chair (my boss) who's really sweet comes in --- and by this point I've taken off  my blazer and I'm just in my shirtsleeves and skirt (it was hot as *eck in the lab) and I'm like "I NEED a TA!" (a TA is a teaching asst)  He's like -- "You need help?"  And I kinda' looked at him.  Anyway, he did help me out which was great and eventually I got all the projects graded.
I also had to listen to all the students complain, and complain loudly about the final -- with colorful vocabulary.  I can't completely blame them 'cause it is a difficult final. (The final is part of the Microsoft Curriculm, so it's a standardised test -- as opposed to my quizzes which I write myself based on the homework).  BUT -- on the other hand, I tell the students about the final being hard all the way thru' class, I offered to do more reviewing, and most nights I ended the class with some of the test bank questions (tho' most of the students had left by then -- but techincally they are to stay until class is dismissed).
It's the class from heck --- at least I have a term off from teaching it.
And my networking class was great -- the students were great, and I even got a lot of complements from one of them.  It was cool!

Oh, before I forget -- answers to the music meme will be posted next weekend.  I want to give folks a week to think about it.

Here's the weather from NOAA.  It's 35 F (2 C) Snowing, with fog and mist.  Wind chill is 27 F (- 3 C) and humidity is 96%.  Oh joy.

Hi all,

Well, I may have mentioned this before, but the technical school where I adjunct has been planning a move for the last term.  Well, last week we were closed for the move, and this week it was completed.  I've now been to the new building twice and it's kinda' a pain to get to, tho' not quite as bad as I expected.  Still, my drive's gone from 22 minutes to 40-plus.  And today, I was halfway down Knapp before I realised I was going the wrong way to get to work.  I ended-up taking a different expressway, and going thru' downtown which is NO fun.  And it was snowing.  It snowed pretty hard while I was entering papers into the grading system and then grading labs.
Tomorrow I get to "babysit the old building" - for pay.  I'm not really sure what this entails, but it's probably re-directing students who show up at the wrong building.
And here's the weather, direct from NOAA:  holy frack 28 degrees F (-2 C) -- I thought it was *cold*.  Wind chill 19 degrees F (-7 C), with snow and cold predicted for the rest of the week.  Winter's here!
Not much else going on today so I'll sign off.

Hi all,

I woke up this morning to about an inch of snow.  It was still snowing lightly, when I got up, which then became heavy big flakes of snow, before stopping.  Later in the afternoon it snowed again.
Tonight's the last night of my little break - exams are this coming week, so I have to get my grading done and entered.  Some of it is done, but nothing's entered, what with the move and lack of computers.
Over my break I've been reading a lot of fanfic and watching a couple of DVDs -- Doctor Who Trial of a Time Lord (4 Colin Baker stories) and The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour best of season 3 (which includes extras from when it ran on E! Entertainment TV) -- unfortunately, the eps are cut, which I don't understand.  Some is surely DRM/music rights issues -- but why are some of the comedy routines cut?  I feel like sending a letter to Time-Life -- complenting them on bringing out the series, but complaining about the cut eps.
That's about all.

Hi all,

Well, I'm back at school - as an instructor as regular readers of this journal know.  Yesterday was my first day back (after missing a week due to a chronic illness).  I got a bit done yesterday, preparing folders for each student, especially for the XP Admin class I teach.  Today, I finished up getting XP stuff ready - at least entering all assignments in Pinnacle Gradebook and get three weeks worth of lesson plans posted to the school server, well, handouts.  Today, I worked on the networking class a lot - the handouts are ready to week 5, and assignments are ready on-line in Pinnacle gradebook to week 5 too.  And since we have a staff meeting tomorrow at noon, I'll have time to get other stuff finished.  It's going to be an interesting term since we move to a new location week 10 (of an 11 week term).  So management's solution is to make EACH class session an extra 20 minutes long, and skip week 10 entirely, and then the students and staff report to the new building for finals.   It sounds pretty stupid to me!  I'm worried students will forget to come to the new location to take their final (and complete final projects).  Oh, well, it's out of my hands.

Weather-wise -- well, I'm in the northern US, Michigan to be precise, and about as far from Texas as you can get -- but we had a very wet weekend and Monday.  It was pouring down rain most of the time and heavily overcast otherwise.  All due to the hurricane, I'm sure.
BUT -- the bad weather has blown over and yesterday and today were GORGEOUS!!!  Sunny, cool, few if any clouds.  Just beautiful.   I wish our weather could be like that all (or at least most) of the time.

Hiya -

Just a brief post today.  I'm house & dog sitting, with my folks in Florida (lucky them), but I finally got a chance to sit down and work on, well, my *work* -- catching up on lesson plans and other stuff for my classes next week (that I teach).  Including, finally, the long-awaited bibliography for my IT students.
But my computer is in the basement and I could feel cold air coming in from the sliding glass door to the deck.  And it was bright and sunny, which was nice, but definately COLD.

Hiya--

Get what?  My school closed early today -- and I was sent home by my boss.  This due to *yet another* blizzard.  Let me tell you about my week.
Monday, we had a bit more new snow, just a little tho, then by lunchtime (I went out to lunch with my folks 'cause it was Mom's birthday) it was raining.  Very light rain, but still rain.  By the time I drove home from work at 11pm, there was heavy, heavy fog.  This wasn't just snow fog, that hugs the ground and you drive in and out of as you go up and down hills -- nope, this was the real thing, heavy duty, pea soup fog.  I *hate* driving in fog -- you can't see anything, and I always feel very disoriented.  I even passed my house and had to turn around and go back.

Tuesday, I don't even remember really, and it was just yesterday, but a lot of snow I guess.

Today -- blizzard conditions.  Even the ride IN to work was no fun, with a lot of snow falling, and slippy roads.  Luckily, it's a in-service day with no students - which might have played into the "we're closed" I found out about around 5pm.  When I walked to my car in the parking lot, my face froze -- and yes, I was wearing a scarf, but it was so cold and windy that my face felt like it was freezing.  And that was just getting to the parking lot and my car.  Brushed the snow off, called home to say I was leaving, and started home.  Only to discover tons of bumper-to-bumper traffic.  In snow.  In LOTS of snow.  I finally said to heck with this and took a detour on secondary roads, avoiding the divided highway I normally take home, just to get out of the traffic.  And even with the snow on the roads, I probably made better time.  The worst things about the drive was (a) the county hadn't plowed - at all; there was between a couple of inches of snow on the roads in some places, to 4-6 inches of snow and slush ON THE ROADS in others.  Even the 4-wheel drive Jeep that I'd borrowed was not having any fun.

Just checked NOAA and my county has: "flood warning (Yeah, I've been expecting that since last week), winter storm warning,

Well, I've been off-line almost a week, got the computer back last night, immediately tried to post and was almost done when I lost my post completely!  And when I tried to get back in, the post didn't pop-up.
So, here it goes again, and it probably won't be so brilliant. <big silly grin>

Sunday, I went to use my machine and it was making a horrible noise, kinda' clunky.  I figured it was the fan, and brought it into work on Wednesday (Monday and Tuesday I talked to folks about bringing it in).  That's one advantage of working at a tech school I guess.  Anyway, when we plugged it in, in the lab - no noise.  It was like when you bring your car to the mechanic and it stops misbehaving!  But I also really, really needed to update my RAM - I only had 256mb.  And the only thing I know about updating RAM is that you have to match it.  Match *what* I had no idea.  But with the help of THREE different tech guys, and the Best Buy website, I figured what I needed (well, they figured it out) and I drove out to Best Buy (in a blizzard, more about that later) which was minutes from school and got a 1 gig stick of DDR RAM.  We popped it in, and the computer recognised the RAM.  Yeah!  So now I have a gig and a quarter (1 gb and the 256mb I had before).  Woo-hoo.  Computer is happy now.  And quiet.  Very quiet, almost creepily quiet.  And all we did was clean it.  Hum.

OK -- weather-wise it's been nuts.

Tuesday, it warmed up to the 40s (F).  I drove home in *pouring* rain.  Now the rain also melted a lot of the snow (right by work we were down to green grass again).  Between the heavy rain and the snow melt the streets were rivers.  And I began to worry about flooding.
By 8 o'clock pm, we actually had thunder and lighting, tho' only for a short time.  Later that night, I could *hear* the wind howling.
The next morning, Wednesday, was amazing.  We'd gotten about 4 inches of snow.  BUT that was on top of ice.  According to the noon local news, the conditions were a "flash freeze".  The temp dropped 31 degrees in five hours.  All that water from the previous day - rain and snow melt?  It froze.  Solid.  This, obviously, included the roads.  And it was so cold that salt wouldn't work to melt the ice.  There were over 500 school, college/university, church and business closings.  A record!  (Which is saying something for Western Michigan).  All the local college/universities were closed except mine of course.  The police were telling people to stay OFF the roads.  Oh, and the governer declared a civil emergency in the northern half of the state.
But I had to work - so I did.  I actually went in around 12:30pm.  And, as I said, I ran over to Best Buy, and got myself some more RAM.  (And it wasn't too bad, other than the fact that all the drivers seemed to think red lights are "just a suggestion" -- I'd *never* seen so many people running red lights in my life.  Tho' in some sense it kinda' made sense, better to go through the intersection with control, than to try to stop and lose control of your car as the breaks failed to work.)
My drive in was slow, but there also was very little traffic.  Drive home was also ok.
Yesterday, Thursday, I had a doctor's appt in the morning - and the driving was actually *worse* than the day before.  It was still really icy, but there was more traffic.  One of the roads I was on is extremely hilly, and going downtown, you are literally going *down* town -- it's down a very steep hill all the way, which was no fun at all, my breaks kept siezing-up and I drive a Jeep Liberty.  I ended-up running errands all day, 'til I went into work (I had to be there at 3:30pm).  WHAT a mess!  And the drive home, no fun at all, it started snowing.  Again.  And the roads were slippy and icy.
Today I'm staying HOME!

Hi all,

Ok, before I get to the "oh boy did I have a bad day", let's go over last night.  Now, Wednesday is my *good* class.  And, anyway, I actually went in to work a little later (I left the house around 2:30pm) because I was reading thru' the textbook, having, already found my notes from MY Microsoft class, and transcribed the relevant parts on NTFS Permissions into my teacher notes.  Anyway, I left after 2pm, rather than around 1 or 1:30pm - and the drive was entertaining to say the least (she said sarcastically) <smirk>  It went from barely snowing to snowing so hard you couldn't see depending on where I was -- literally block by block, well, even less than a block since I live in a rural area and rural blocks are a lot longer than city ones.  But the drive was awful.  And, when I got into my classroom/lab area (the dreaded superlab I've complained about before) I had only like 4 or 5 students, however, eventually the rest of my class drifted in one by one (well, except the student who's about to be dropped for non-attendance).  Still, the class was great like always.  I really do enjoy it.  And, I managed to give my own "mini-lecture" on NTFS Permissions OK.  I mean, I was a bit nervous, but it really did go OK.
Then today, ok, I had a doctor's appt before by lab hours, so I was driving to my appt and there was a car accident RIGHT in front of me.  I mean, immediately in front of me.  Well, I was screaming "Oh, my god!" but also managed to pull over to the shoulder, and called 911 on my cell.  The whole thing was really scary.  This car changed lanes without looking and the other car swerved to avoid getting hit, and then the driver lost control and drove right thru' a road sign, into the median and landed in a snow drift. (Snow was flying everywhere - as did the road sign).  I called over to the other car, but she didn't respond and I couldn't see movement, so like I said I called 911 and said "There was a car accident right in front of me," and they asked if anyone was hurt, and I said "Yes - I can see into the car and the people aren't moving."
I then told the operator I was driving south on such-and-such road, but I couldn't quite remember what cross street I'd just crossed.  I did tell the operator the name of the restaurant I was sitting in front of, and eventually kinda' figured out what the cross street was.  But, it was weird that I couldn't quite remember where I was at first.  I then asked the operator/dispatcher if I needed to wait, and he said yes.  And after that I hung up.  Then I called the doctor's office, explained what happened and that I'd be late.  So I waited.  And waited.  And the driver of the other car eventually started moving around, so I called over to her from MY car, with the window down.  (This was on a VERY busy divided highway.  Luckily, the median is wide, and in summer - grassy.  Since it's obviously winter, it was piled high with snow.)  I explained that I saw what happened, and called 911.  And, I found out the girl was ok.  And we BOTH waited.  And waited some more.  After a bit, she called over to me, asking if she could use the cell to call her husband.  I said sure, so I ended up with her in my car for awhile, and she made a couple of calls to reach her husband.  She was also really glad that I stopped.  Then she went back to her car, and we both waited some more.  Eventually, I called work to try to find out what to do (the tech school where I teach has a criminal justice dept - and I didn't know if I could leave or what.  I mean, I wasn't the one who *caused* the accident, I just saw it).  I ended-up talking to my boss, who said it was OK if I was late, since I just had office/help lab hours.  Just after THAT call, the sherriff's dept *finally* showed up.  As did a tow-truck.  All told it took an hour and a half - hour 45 minutes for the Kent County sherriff to actually arrive.  To my surprise there were TWO officers in the car.  I ended up having to write out a statement - and I told the sheriff both verbally and in my written statement that another car caused the accident AND just took off - never stopped.  I also had to give my name, address, driver's license #, and phone numbers to the sherriff.  And I had previously given my business card to the other driver with my name and phone numbers (I hand-wrote my cell # on it, since the cell is new) and email, but not my physical address.  (The business card I'd made myself when I was looking for a job after graduating, so it had "IT Professional", and my certifications on it.)
But it was a VERY scary experience.  I've never seen an accident like that.  I've been in a couple (minor ones), but not had one occur right in front of me.  And the crazy thing is - I actually managed to get to work on time.
That's all for now.
Take care out there,

Hi all,

It was FREEZING this past weekend.  Down in the single digits.  We're talking, step outside and all the moisture instantly disapeers from your nose.  And we got more snow.  Monday it was really bad, not just snowing, like it has been since November, but extremely icy.  Today, every school BUT mine was off.  Even the community college where my brother teaches was closed due to weather.  I only had labs, but I went it!  And, actually, I got a lot done -- all my grading for my XP class tomorrow, lesson plans for this week and next week, most of my teacher notes for tomorrow, and 2/3rds of my teacher notes for next Weds. class.
However, I really need to review the topic -- NTFS Permissions (and next week is Shared Folder security - oh joy).  The topics are kinda' inter-related.  BUT, I'm looking forward to the class.  I actually do have fun with "my guys" (and girls!) -- it's kinda' like "geek-talk", which can be actually fun!
I also finally got off my butt and got some fun things rolling.   I finally got the software working for my cell phone - I had to install it on the new (well, newer than my Dell) Gateway, but at least I can transfer pictures and sounds on and off the phone.  The same user pic I have on this post (the TARDIS) is now my inside wallpaper - tho' I still have one of my cats as the outside wallpaper.  And I have family pics on the phone too (I'm using them as "contact pics").
The other thing I did was contact Media Mugs.  www.mediamugs.com  They have a ton of awesome mugs with fannish pictures on them - I bought three china mugs last year at Media West, SGA and Life on Mars for me and another one that's a gift for a friend.  Anyway, I *really* wanted a DW one, but didn't like any of the designs they had.  So now I'm getting three DW ones with pics I had on my hard drive, and I'm trying to get a *Torchwood* one too.  I sent her a pic of Jack, but I need the Torchwood honeycomb T and the word "Torchwood" in the font from the show.  If anyone can help let me know - e-mail me, or contact me via this blog (leave a message).

Hi all -

Well, I bought a cell phone in Sept for work.  I didn't want to give out my home phone number to students, so I got a cell phone so they can contact me.  And I went to one of those mobile phone stores, that was having a special "grand opening" sale, because I needed a free phone, and they were promising a really cool one.

I got there, and they basically had two deals -- if your credit check was ok you got the fancy phone, and if it wasn't you got the basic one.  Much to my surprise, I passed the credit check (don't ask).  So, I got the really fancy Sony Ericsson phone with built-in camera, mp3 player, file manager, contacts/calender - the works.
I also bought (for $25.00) the data cable to transfer files from the phone to my pc and back.

I then went home and tried to download the software for the phone.  Well, I have dial-up (yes, I live in the middle of nowhere).  It took HOURS, and then the software wouldn't install.  So, a few days later, I went to the McSchool where I did my certification program, borrowed a pc and downloaded the software to my flash drive, and brought it home.  Tried to install it - no go.  Called the cell phone company, and was told "try to install it with your virus software off".  Now, I knew that wasn't the greatest idea, but I figured I'd try it.  The program still wouldn't install.

Well, I got busy (work, holidays) so I just put the whole idea on the back burner.

Over Christmas break, tho, I set-up and installed a relatively new Gateway computer (XP) in the house.  So I copied the Sony Ericsson file to my thumb drive, took it from my PC to the Gateway, and installed the software.  To my shock, it worked!  I also copied my "phone files folder" to the thumb drive and moved that to the other PC, and created a "Phonefiles2" folder on that pc.  I copied the files (pictures) from the phone to phonefiles2, copied the files (pics and sounds) from "Phonefiles" to the phone.  I then disconnected the phone.  After that I checked and sure enough, my pics (and sounds) had been updated.

So -- anyone know how I can either:
A: -- Edit .mp3 files  (Specifically, I'd like to use some music files that I have as ringtones)  Actually, any info, even links to websites that explain making ringtones, I'd be interested in.
B. -- Know of a website with *Doctor Who* THEME ringtones (classic or new series) -- must allow downloads to the US

And about pictures - I tried to upload/link a picture last night and it didn't work.  Anyone know what I did wrong?

Now-- weather.  After the blizzard yesterday I woke up to a total of 4-6 inches of snow, but about 2 inches of that was old.  And we got some flurries today.   I hope frequent snow doesn't continue as frequent rain in April or May or we will have some serious flooding around here, like we did a few years ago.  I mean, my house is on high ground and well away from any of the three rivers - but I have to cross a bridge to get out of the immediate area, no matter what way I go!

Hi all,

A friend of mine introduced me to I has Cheezburger dot com, which has really funny pics of cats (and sometimes other animals) with silly slogans.

Check this out:

This morning is was bright and sunny, tho' we still had a couple of inches of snow on the ground.  Went into work at 12:30pm (remember I work second shift).  at 5:15pm I left work to meet my Dad for dinner.  It was snowing, hard and cold.  We had dinner - and my drive home was AWFUL.  I just *love* driving in a blizzard - not.

Have a good weekend.  I had a great week, other than being sick yesterday.

Hi all,

Okay, it's been awhile since I've updated, but last week was nuts, and then on Friday when I finally got home and wanted to relax, we had a genuine emergency in our house.  After dinner, I went downstairs to the finished basement (I was going to get on-line and amoung other things catch-up this journal) when I smelled propane strongly.  We have a propane furnance and other appliances.  Well, we called Crystal Flash and they said they'd send someone out.  Two *hours* later the repair guy appeared, he started running tests then said - "well, you've definately got a leak," which had to be the scariest words EVER.   He and his partner ran around, eventually determined it was the water heater and repaired it.  But man, that was scary -- plus I couldn't be IN the basement where the TV and computer are.  The guy left by about 9:15pm tho' so I saw most of *Monk* and all of *Psych*.

The new episode of *Psych* was great -- I loved Shawn's worry and over-protectiveness of Gus.  And the competition between Juliet and Lassiter was handled well-- funny, but not too over-the-top.

Friday morning we got snow, all day Sunday it snowed, and today I woke up to more snow.  This was good tho' because last weekend it got up into the 40s and we had rain and a lot of snow fog, then it rained all week until, as I said, Friday.

My Monday night class was a nightmare.  Y'know -- they're adults, why can't they follow simple directions?  And, to make matters worse I was monitored.  God, it was awful.  (And I still haven't gotten the results of my review, tho' the guy who did it (my other boss) said he had "positive feedback" whatever that means.  My Wednesday night class went much better, but I was more prepared.  I think I need to start practicing the labs before I assign them, tho, for both classes.

Hi all,

Let's see -- Been meaning to update my blog for awhile, but not much has been going on.  We had another big storm on New Year's Day.  Woke up to 4-6 inches of new snow, plus it snowed all day.  Wednesday, more of the same, but with a bit of sun in the afternoon.
Today's Thursday (Never could get the hang of Thursdays! -- to quote Arthur Dent)  we actually had a lot of sun, the temps tho' were in the upper teens/low 20s (F).  Which I prefer to having it hover around freezing and being very wet!  I had to go downtown for a doctor's appt, and not only was I late (lost track of the time) but I forgot to grab some change for the parking meter.  Luckily, I had just enough change in my wallet for a hour (It helped that the meter still had 5 minutes left).  I usually put in enough for an hour and fifteen minutes, just in case, but I think I ended up with an hour five minutes, eight minutes, something like that.  But luckily, I didn't get a ticket - I got back to the car before the time ran out.
Then, I drove to work and worked on uploading my lesson plans, quiz (revised to please my boss), and quiz answers.  I also checked that everything was graded for my XP class and added in the assignments for the next week in our gradebook program.  Basically, everything is done for that class, except my lecture notes, for two weeks.  Tomorrow, I'll go in and get the Microsoft Office class updated (I have the lesson plan for next week, and some sample Excel docs ready).  What I need to do for that class is go thru' the lessons for this week (Jan 7th) and the following week and figure out exactly what I'm going to do, I might need to move stuff around.

Ta for now,
Olivia

Hi--

Yep, it's been awhile since I've posted any DW quotes.  And, this is by no means a comprehensive list.  I still need to really go through all the episodes of Series 1 (esp. "The Long Game" and "Dalek") but here's a start.  And, though I've seen all of Series 2 and 3 (with David Tennant) I haven't gathered any quotes yet.
The good news is that I have all three series on DVD now, and provided the DVD player doesn't die on me (knock on wood), when I get time I'm going through both classic and new DW eps, looking for scenes for some vids I want to do and for quotes.

Hi all,

Thursday woke up to an inch or two of new snow, but the temp got so warm that it had mostly melted by early afternoon.
Friday it snowed, and snowed hard most of the day.  By Saturday morning, we had a good four to six inches of snow.  Saturday, I wanted to update this blog but spent the ***entire day*** trying to get an update of McAfee anti-virus to install on my system.  It was AWFUL!  First, I tried to do a simple update -- but I was informed my product was "no longer available" and I'd have to buy a different product.  McAfee then tried to sell me two different products that were (a) much more expensive and (b) full of "useful features" I definately did NOT want (like "site monitoring" -- which is a PC way of saying "censorship" -- I'm an adult, dammit, and I'm going to read fanfic if I want to.  And I don't need no corporation telling me what I can and can't read, or telling me fanfic net is a porn site or whatever idiotic thing they might do.  But I scanned thru' and found a basic anti-virus/firewall -- essentially the same product I bought last year, and purchased that.  But, of course, you can't get a CD mailed to you anymore (tho' they charged me $12.00 for a "recovery CD") you have to download the software.  Well, I went thru' the hoops, put in my debit/credit card info, and started the download.  TWO HOURS later, it had finally downloaded, started installing, and then forced me to uninstall SpyBot Search and Destroy (my favorite spyware catcher).  It took another half hour to install and set-up the anti-virus (and it still tried to install "site advisor", or rather "cite censor", which I unchecked).  Finally, I turned off the PC completely, went to church, dinner, and running of errands, got home, turned the computer on again, and ran a FULL scan (which took about two hours).  Fortunately, that worked.  So now, all I need to do is download a new version of Spybot and everything should be good.  (Well, that and defrag my hard drive, even if it takes hours).

Onto happier subjects.  I watched *Stardust* last night and it was just as enjoyable and fun a movie as I thought it was last summer when I first saw it.  The DVD tho' was having trouble.  It was breaking up during the previews at the beginning of the DVD.  I took the dvd out, put it in again, and when I hit "play" it skipped ahead and started the actual movie -- which played fine.  But I started watching the "making of" featurette, and halfway thru' it just stopped playing-- the picture froze.  I stopped the DVD, and since it was late, went to bed.
This morning, tried the DVD again, and same skipping.  Ran a "dishwasher" DVD, tried again, same problem.  Pulled out a different DVD -- "The Professionals" Season 4 Disc 2 and watched "Discovered in a Graveyard" and it played perfectly -- no groans from the DVD player, no other sounds, no break-up, no skipping.
So at this point -- I'm not sure if it's the DVD player, since I'm having trouble with DW S2 and Stardust, and the final disc of "Jeeves and Wooster"; or if, somehow, by bad luck, I got a bunch of bad DVDs.
OR, if somehow, they've changed the encoding again on R1 NTSC DVDs and my multi-region/multi-system DVD player can't handle the new encoding.  It's research time, I suppose.  Not to mention I may have to hook-up my old DVD player and try the new DVDs on it to see if they play.
In a word-- AAAAARRRRGHHH!  I really can't afford to buy a new DVD player right now.  But with a couple of hundred of DVDs in my collection (I added up all the DVDs, including the multi-disc sets and I actually have, in terms of actual, individual, DVDs, over a 1000), I can't really afford to be without a player.  And I can't buy a cheap one, because I have like 15-20 R2 PAL DVDs, which I actually watch, so I'm not going to buy something that won't play the R2 PAL DVDs.
G0shawk asked what type of Ipod I got.  It's an 8-gig Nano, greenish-blue color.  My first choice would have been either pink (traditional or hot pink) or silver.  But they were sold out of those colors at Target, so it was black or the blueish green.  I went with blueish green.  And I do love it, even though getting it set-up was a headache.  But, I love having something I can use to listen to podcasts (getting caught up --yea!) or to listen to music at work.  The little earphones that go in your ears, tho', I find kinda' painful (I have small ears), so I think I'm going to have to go earphone shopping.  I saw some gelatin ones at Barnes and Noble (of all places!) that I might get -- or something that goes over the ears, rather than in them.
That's all for now!

Hi all,

Happy Holidays to all!  I actually had a good Christmas this year (much better than last year which was just one disappointment after another).  Starting with last Saturday -- as regular readers of this journal will know, we've had snow since Thanksgiving (late Nov).  Until Sat. -- when the temp suddenly shot up to the upper 40s (F), the snow melted, it rained and we had heavy fog.  Sunday, however, my county (Kent) was under a winter storm advisory.  The Lakeshore area and Southern Michigan were under (a more severe) winter storm warning.  We had light snow on Sunday, and of course the standing water from Sat froze over, but it didn't look like we'd get much snow.  However, I woke up on Christmas Eve day to about four inches of fresh fluffy snow!
I went to the 7:30pm Christmas Mass with my parents, and it was actually quite nice.  After words we (me and my folks) had hot cocoa and a snack, then opened *some* presents -- I got the movie *Stardust* which I really wanted, and Mom enjoyed the scented oil stuff I bought her for her lamberge lamp (Kinda' like a Hurricane lamp, but smaller and it actually cleans the air rather than providing light and scent).  Dad liked his CDs too.  Christmas Day I went over to my brother and sister-in-law's.  Now, my sister-in-law is really really cheap, and she frequently pisses me off at Christmas to be frank about it.  (After all, I routinely spend over a $100 on her, my brother and the twins but she doesn't really give me a gift, really.  Don't get me wrong, I don't *mind* buying gifts for my niece and nephew, but it would be nice if she gave *me* something nice-- last year I got a bunch of like hand-creams and such which I couldn't even use 'cause they had lanolin in them, which I'm HIGHLY allergic to.  It turns my hands and skin bright red.)
But this year I actually did get some nice things from her, my brother and the twins.  I got a frosted candle holder with a metalic red liner and a raindeer design (the red foil can be seen under the frosted glass where the raindeer are) with some tealights (tho' the holder is actually kinda' big for tealights, it would hold a voltive or larger candle).  I collect candle holders, so that was nice.  Then I got a pair of fuzzy-warm polar fleece slippers, and some hand lotion  (don't know why she *always* wants to give me hand lotion!).
But my folks gave me two more presents -- *Heroes* Season 1 on DVD, which I was expecting 'cause I'd been hinting about it every chance I got, and a big surprise -- *Doctor Who Series 2* -- which I was **missing**.  I'd got Series 3 myself, and I ordered Series 1 from the UK when I came out there, but I was missing Series 2 (simply didn't have the money for it last year).  So that was a happy surprise.
And the kids loved their gifts -- not only was my nephew playing with his toy dinosaur, my neice was too -- and she played with the Barbie clothes I got her for her Barbie.  (Yep, I played Barbies with my neice.  Hey, she's 4! Almost 5.)
We had a big dinner, but by then I wasn't feeling well (horrible migraine headache) so I didn't eat much.
Overall, it was a good day tho'.

Oh-- and I got myself an Ipod!  Yep, after spending almost my entire check last week on presents, I got one for myself and I bought an Ipod!  It's cool!

Take care all -- and Happy Holidays, even if it's a bit late.

Hi all,

This morning we got even more snow, and my drive in to work for the monthly staff meeting was pretty treacherous.  The meeting only lasted an hour though, and then I started working on next week's lesson plans (because somehow in all the rush and worry to teach this week, I'd forgotten about last week).  So I worked on those for hours, only to discover I had forgotten my flash drive.  I ended-up just e-mailing everything I had worked on to myself.  But the MOST frustrating thing was another instructor pointed out that the assignments and quizes and such I was entering into gradebook (our new software) had to be weighted.  I kinda' blinked and said "Weighted?".  Well, for the XP class this was pretty straight forward.  For the computers and office productivity course - it was a nightmare, because the class doesn't have any quizes according to the syallbus - but I wanted to have weekly quizzes over the homework and reading.  So now I don't know what to do - should I grade the quizzes as part of homework?  Have quizzes but not grade them?  Take some weight from the in-class labs and projects and add it to quizzes?  I have no idea at this point.  So I guess I'll need to talk to Wilson or Eric about it - but this afternoon I was so frustrated I didn't want to talk to anyone quite yet, til I had a chance to think about it.  -- The other instructors keep telling me it gets better, and I certainly hope so!
---------------------------------------------------

But on to quotes.  My DW quote list is in order by episode and Doctor, so that's how I'm presenting them, tho' a re-arrangement by category would be fun (and would make for a great book!).  I'm starting with classic Who quotes, but I will get into the new series, and probably *Torchwood* as well (Tho' TW isn't as quotey).
