OK -- I received the following e-mail today from someone on Fanfic net:

Obviously, this idiot does NOT know her fannish history, and I'm taking it very personally. I know fandom was around in 1988, I was there.
I've been going to Mediawest since 1988, more or less nonstop, except for a few years off for grad school. Fanzines have been around since the 1970s. I want fellow fans, especially fans on Fanfic Net to flood this person with the facts. Books, articles, links -- anything showing her that we fans DO HAVE a history! Besides attempting to correct her, I sent her bibliographic info on Star Trek Lives! (1975, Bantam, Lictenberg, Mashak, and Winston), Textual Poachers, Enterprising Women, and surprisingly enough an article in this month's Wired magazine about fans of Sherlock Holmes who wrote fanfic (Brown, Scott. "The Giant Nerds of Sumatra"). But, I need support -- I don't want to see this turn into a fan war (I've seen plenty of those), and I certainly don't want to be kicked off fanfic net, but I am REALLY angry that this kid thinks she knows it all (she also got the birth order of the boys from Thunderbirds wrong -- but that's a secondary issue). I said in my e-mail to her, her uneducated opinion was like saying evolution isn't real -- but the more I think about it, the more I think it's like morons who insist The Holocost didn't happen. Obviously, it did, to the shame of the Human Race. PLEASE help me - help prevent us fans from being denyed existance! By the way, as you can tell, I'm angry -- but I really, really tried not to let my anger or any sacasism show in my response. Really.
