For all of you NOT familiar with Doctor Who, the original classic series ran on the BBC from 1963 to 1989. Yes, you read that right that's 26 years, which is a world record for a SF program. In the original run seven actors played the Doctor through the years, and there were dozens of companions (both male and female, mostly from Earth, but some that were alien). The format of the original series during most of the series was half-hour episodes, with several episodes making a complete story. Stories ranged from two to twelve episodes long (the now lost "Dalek's Master-plan"), however the most common length was four episodes (which creates an hour and a half-length story, about the same length as most movies). Doctor Who was famous for it's cliff-hanger endings for the individual episodes that made up a complete story.
In the US, Doctor Who ran in two formats - daily "stripped" format with one half-hour episode airing each day. This format is preferred by fans because it's the original format of the show, tho' in the UK the show only aired one episode weekly (or bi-weekly during the Davison years). However, there was another format, movie format, where the individual episodes of a story were edited together and shown all at once. Long stories (anything over 6 parts) were split in half. Anyway, my local PBS station ran the show in movie format on Saturdays at 4pm, and that's how I saw it for the most part. However, the very first time I saw DW, as a young child was in "stripped" format on a different PBS station that I was able to watch at my folks cottage. Overall, I preferred "stripped format" but actually saw the show in movie format.
Anyways, on DVD, the DW Restoration Team has been working on restoring the episodes, and releasing them on DVD with lots of extra features (sometimes even including 2 discs for a release). So, the releases are like movies, and they do skip around, tho' on the disc itself it's episode format - and you have the option of watching straight through with title sequences and cliffhangers (play all function) or choosing the episode you want to watch (e.g. ep 1 of "Logopolis", ep. 2, etc) and they skip around in the releases the Restoration Team makes, trying to please everyone (who like different "eras"/Doctors)
