G0Shawk asked, "What are podcasts?" Well, I was answering her, and explained what podcasts I subscribe to, when my Internet connection died (I'm on dratted dial-up, because, yes, I live in the middle of nowhere). So I figured I'd post my answer to her question here. I figure it wouldn't hurt to post what I subscribe to - it gives some insight into my personality (well, that, or everyone out there will see just how weird I am). So, here it goes, the original post. --Olivia

Podcasts are Internet radio programs. You can listen to them live (e.g. "streaming") or download them to your Ipod. Tho' to download them you need to subscribe. Subscribing is free, and new podcasts will be automatically downloaded to iTunes, then you can transfer them to your Ipod when you sync.
Right now I subscribe to three:
PodShock - The Doctor Who podcast -- A general podcast about my favorite SF TV show of all time, *Doctor Who*. Altho' the 3-4 guys doing the podcast concentrate on the new series (BBC, 2005 - present, Russell T Davies producing), most of the folks involved in the show have been fans since the 1970s and fondly remember the original classic series (BBC, 1963-1989, BBC/FOX 1996-ish), so the classic series pops up occasionally.
CinemaSlave -- A general film podcast, co-produced by a guy in Scranton, PA and an Australian. Seems to concentrate on Japanese films/anime and horror movies, but I'm hoping to see more on classic films (I've only listened to 4 episodes so far).
CERN LHC (Large Hadron Collidor) podcast -- A podcast on particle physics. I first became aware of this one thru' *Torchwood*. On one of the LJ *Torchwood* communities, someone posted a link to a youTube vid of John Barrowman at the LHC in Cern. In the TV interview, which was extremely interesting, they said you could hear the entire interview at the CERN podcast. I popped over to iTunes Store and listened to it live (which, since I was on dial-up, kept breaking up). It was so interesting that a few days later I decided to subscribe, and at this very moment I'm trying to download the entire thing (all the episodes so far). Wish me luck. But, basically, what they are doing is bringing in various celebrities and talking about various projects at CERN LHC, which is a super-collider. The John Barrowman one, which was really, really good, was talking about (a) various strange particles and quarks (they even asked John what type of Quark he'd be!) and a project to try to accelerated and explode quarks and observe a mini-Big Bang to try to figure out how the universe started. It's very interesting, if just a tad over my head in terms of the science. Still, I had seen something on The Science Channel about multi-universe/parallel universe theory, string theory, and other stuff that was also mentioned in the podcast. Fascinating!
