YouTube is a lifeline for transgender teens, twentysomethings - LA Times
I'm posting this not because I'm Transgender or even know anyone who is, but because I'm fascinated by how Social Media, in the case of this article, youTube is being used by a marginalized group to find a voice, form community, and to find support. The positive examples of Social Media abound, yet the mainstream media only focuses on the negative (Cyber bullying, stalking, porn) - as if real world bullying doesn't exist.
Also, this article has an incredibly positive outlook in it's positive description of Transgender Teens and Twenty-somethings, without using slurs or derogatory language. The article itself shows how New Media can be better, and certainly more positive than Traditional Media.
Oh, and I support LGBT Rights - because I see them for what they are - Human Rights. How can you decide someone else doesn't have the right to marry (or work, or rent an apartment) simply because of the gender of people they are attracted to or the gender of the person they live with? Denying basic human rights to any single group of people - because of race, gender identity, ethnic background, religion, or for any other reason is, quite simply, wrong. Telling LGBT people they cannot marry - is simply wrong.
