So yesterday [that is - 1/15/2014], instead of reading before bed, like I should have, I was reading Facebook, and saw posts about West Virginia.  So I googled it and was absolutely appalled.  And I was still so upset when I finally went to bed last night I couldn’t sleep.  My mind was filled with nightmarish visions of what had happened.

And even though I was sad, and upset, and felt bad about the people — they had voted in Republicans that banned the EPA from the state and prevented OSHA from examining what was happening at “Freedom” Industries.  (Freedom, hah!  It’s anything but Freedom for nine counties that now have no potable water!)  So the company decided it was cheaper to dump their poisonous chemicals into the river instead of treating them as they should have — and they’ve destroyed West Virginia as a result.  The environment, the people, the animals - poisoned, by an uncaring company that figured they could save a few bucks.  Sure - they claim it was an “accident” - the only accident they saw was that they got caught, because people and pets started dying.

I couldn’t get the images out of my head, I kept waking, and hugging my cat, too upset to even cry.  Imagine if you will, a little boy, just five years old.  He wakes, and goes to feed his beloved dog.  He dumps out the dog’s water bowl, just like he does every morning, rinses it, then fills the bowl from the tap.  The dog drinks the water, then howls in pain, convulses, and dies - all in front of the little boy.  The boy is devastated. He loved his dog.  He whispered his confidences to his dog, they walked and played in the woods, he threw sticks to the dog. And now the poor dog is dead, poisoned with chemicals in the water — chemicals the boy had no way of knowing were there.  And for the rest of his life the boy has to live with that, remembering that his dog died by his own hand.  He has to remember seeing it, and hearing the dog scream as caustic acids ripped him apart from the inside.

Or imagine a woman waking, and washing her hands after her morning ablutions - screams, as instead of clean, fresh water, chemically contaminated acidic, caustic water burns her hands.

A man starts his morning shower - and the room fills with deadly steam.

A person steps in the shower and instead of clean water, is doused with chemicals and is burned.

A man grabs his morning coffee, takes a swig - and discovers a new meaning to a burned mouth.

These are just some of the things that happen - when the water is poisoned with chemicals and no one even knows about it.  Freedom Industries denied the “spill” happened for hours, perhaps days.  When it was discovered, they refused to tell rescuers what type of chemical had been dumped in the river.  To paraphrase, Jaws, this was no accident.

The CEOs and managers deserve to be charged with murder, attempted murder, spoiling the environment, and animal cruelty.  They should serve jail time.  How many people died or suffered incredible burns?  And the entire animal population, wild and domestic — how can they survive without water?  How long before people are killing their own pets to save them from a long, drawn-out death due to dehydration?  Or farmers killing their cattle, sheep, and horses?

What happened in West Virginia was horrific - but maybe it can be a wake-up call, that something has to change.  Something must change. West Virginia wasn’t an isolated incident.  In Texas, a fertilizer plant blew-up due to corporation negligence - and a Republican Texas governor who refused to allow OSHA to make employee safety inspections of the plant just months before.  In Pennsylvania, the groundwater of an entire neighborhood was destroyed when Fracking poisoned the aquafer - then the corporation behind it claimed people were making it up.  Sludge pouring out of taps instead of water, houses filled with methane gas, and people were making it up?  Sure.  Then there was the XL Keystone pipeline that burst — spilling crude oil all over a Western town.  Rent-a-Cops, employed by the oil industry didn’t allow reporters to take photos or shoot video of the devastation.  Reporters and ordinary people had cameras and phones smashed, and were beaten with clubs if they refused to leave.

I was heartsick last night, thinking about the people of West Virginia, and all the dead and dying pets and wildlife.  A once beautiful area, destroyed, so Freedom Industries could save a few bucks by dumping their chemicals in a river instead of treating them and storing them as they should have.  It’s horrific.

Well said, Nea, well said!!!  NOBODY goes deer hunting with either a handgun or a semi-automatic sub-machine gun.  It is STUPID that because the NRA is one of the single biggest lobbies in America, we all must live under the gun, literally.  When the framers of the constitution wrote the 2nd Amendment - allowing people to have guns meant "you have the right to go out and shoot your own dinner".  No one, absolutely no one in the US in this century kills their own meat on a daily basis.  No one.  Not even hunters.
Guns don't make you safe -- they cause more violence and deadly violence.  'Nuff said.

Note to self: There is yet to be a dick-swinging macho-man who is going to actually listen to a logical argument about the perils of the "let mah gun and mah bravery solve everything" mindset. Especially when the argument is coming from a woman.

On the other hand, I am learning more than I wanted to know about the number of times when some jerkwad has shot into crowds in America. Guess what: victims in the crowd HAVE shot back. Guess what else: it hasn't stopped the homicidal maniacs.

Not.

Once.

Hasn't even slowed 'em down.

And still, every time there's an atrocity, there's a whole bunch of people saying "well, if we had MORE guns, we could just solve it all by shooting back!" At least now after the initial shock, a huge chorus of people are finally chiming in re: how sane and safe it would [not] have been to shoot across a crowded, dark, smoky theater full of panicking, running people even if anyone in the audience had a weapon with them. Thankfully, some of these people are very, very pissed off gun owners who don't like being lumped in with the people who don't know the difference between a glock and their gonads.

And still, and STILL, the John Wayne wannabes are claiming that if they'd been there, and if they'd had their weapon with them, it all would have been so different... and when you call them on it, you're a coward and an idiot, and if you don't love the second amendment, get out of America.

The second amendment covered muzzle loading flintlocks and a home militia. What the fuck does a civilian need a semi-automatic for, to pre-grind the deer meat?

An armed society is not a polite society, it is merely armed.

Hi all,

And now that my updates are complete, some of you may have noticed that my "mood" icon is at annoyed (or even p***ed off) -- this actually has nothing to do with Live Journal, my movie blogs, or most of my on-line (or even off-line life).  I'm ***annoyed*** because my cousin is being a jerk -- and keeps leaving nasty messages on my Facebook acct insisting I'm the one that apparently started this little war.  So I get to e-mail him tonight sometime and try to explain, again, that I'm PISSED at the way the Republicans are taking away women's rights, that that right here in Michigan (which I live, incidentally) the Republicans threw out (barred from the state house) TWO female state reps for saying the word "vagina" in the state house.  My cousin posted to MY Facebook page that he thought this was totally acceptable.  I told him he was wrong.  Now, I'm getting nasty texts and Facebook messages from him.  I'm so sick of his Conservative family, the Conservative (largely Fundamentalist Christian) town I live in, and frankly all the f-ing partisan politics that are screwing up the entire damn country.  And NO, it's not Obama's fault -- it's the damn, lying, Republican bastards who won't let him do a damn thing -- it's their fault!

This is an AWESOME article!

BBC News - LiveJournal: Russia's unlikely internet giant

This article has three fascinating aspects to it.
First, it's another wonderful example of ordinary people using the Internet for
social and political actions.
Second, these are young Russians using an American blogging platform that's largely
run by volunteers.
And third, THINK about SOPA then read this article.
Then REALLY think about how SOPA would destroy your right to free speech,
as well as denying freedom of speech to the planet.
Just what are the Republicans so afraid of?
It ain't so-called terrorists --
it's US, normal, ordinary people standing up and talking about what we think and feel.

Please do everything you can to help STOP SOPA!!! This law would make blogging illegal and shut down sites like LJs, Blogger, Fanfic Net, Wraithbait, Archive of Our Own (A03), youTube, Facebook, Twitter, Linked-IN. This law MUST be stopped before it's two late.

Stop internet censorship!

Please read this entire article.  It's a perfect example of how hate and prejudice can make a person miserable even when it's only covert, and not overt.  And this isn't just true of your sexuality.  When people you work with discriminate against you because of your religion, or your ethnic background, or your political beliefs, or anything and everything that makes you, well, you, that is fundamentally wrong.  It is very difficult to constantly have to guard what you say out of fear while not out and out lying all the time.  And life can be so much better when you don't have to live in constant fear of being fired because of you education level, your experiences, etc.

This is the best idea I've seen in years.  By unilaterally elimenating all student loan debt, millions of dollars will be released into the economy.  And a source of stress for millions of Americans will disappear overnight.  I could easily buy a house for what I owe in student loans.  Think about what spending that much could do -- especially when every dollar spent affects the economy by a factor of seven.  Please sign, even if you don't have student loan debt hanging around your neck.

This is just SO, So wrong!!!  Conservative Republicans decide to start eliminating Democrats - Permanently!
Palin claims, "Oh, this wasn't my fault" -- when she listed this VERY SAME Congresswoman on her website as someone who deserved to die.  Palin even used crosshairs to suggest the loyal conservatives take the woman out.  It's disgusting!  Right up there with the conservative radio host who suggested that anyone who votes for the Democrats is a terrorist.  Yeah, right!  Anyone ever tell these people what a single-party system is?  It's RUSSIA!!!  It the time of the Tsars or under Stalin it didn't matter, it was still a country of terrible religious and politcal oppression -- just what the damn conservatives in America want making the US a "Christian Fudamentalist country" -- taking away YOUR and MY right to practice any religion.  Right in the Constitution we are guaranteed the right to Freedom of religion.  Hell, you can paint yourself blue and dance naked in the woods and as long as you don't hurt anyone no one should care -- but not in Palin and King GW world!

And read the article -- this congresswoman was a middle-of the road, centralist Democrat.   Someone who CARED about people and wanted to help them.  Now look what's happened.
Not to mention that a 9-year-old child was killed.  Republicans claim to be right-to-life -- and they are killing CHILDREN people.  It's so, so, so wrong!

I want to cry buy I'm also bloody angry!

Hi all,

I finally get a chance to check igoogle (my free RSS reader) and e-mail -- and what I find ticks me off.  See below:  Conservative Republicans are trying to stop all educational, renewable energy, and science funding in the new economic stimulus bill.  Just because these people don't believe in science (You-know-who, the former pres didn't believe evolution was scientific or that global warming was a fact for ex) they are yet again forcing their unscientific views on the rest of us.  Write your congress-people and complain.

blog.wired.com/wiredscience/2009/02/sciencecuts.html

What angers me is that yet again religion is taking precedence over education, science and the welfare of the country as Repubicans in Congress try to discredit Obama, destroy economic stimulus, and ruin the nation's already shreded scientific and educational rep.
