Olivia Sutton: Small fandoms a specialty!
Hi! My on-line pen name is Olivia Sutton and this is my Blog! Blogging is new to me, so don't expect a lot of updates or any sort of theme. For more on how I got started on blogging, read my first post.
This page is my fannish résumé. And yeah, there's a lot on here, because I've been in fandom for twenty years. Primarily my interests in fandom are: Fanfic writing both in zines and on-line. And attending conventions. I also love watching fan-made music vids, and would like to make my own someday, but so far I haven't had the equipment or the time.
I am a born and bred Midwesterner, currently in the state of Michigan, though I have lived all over the Midwestern United States (Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin and Missouri). I also lived in Canada for two years, one year in Winnipeg, Manitoba and one year in Thunder Bay, Ontario. I have an undergrad degree in history from Indiana University (Bloomington, Indiana), where I also studied journalism and anthropology. I have a graduate degree (master of science) in anthropology with a graduate certificate in museum studies from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (located, obviously, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin). I recently finished a second master's degree in information science (IT) from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. I graduated with distinction with a GPA of 3.77. (Distinction is like Cum Laude in the better-known Latin system). After years of being a professional student, I've finally found a new career that I like and I'm excited about. And a teaching post. Woo-hoo! (OK, it's only adjunct at this point, but it will lead to bigger and better things! And it's great experience! Considering I was sincerely worried that I wouldn't get a job after grad school, because yes, that had happened before, I'm just extremely happy about my career at this point.)
I have been in fandom since I was 18 and attended my first media convention, Babel Con in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Very soon after that, I attended my first MediawestCon, in Lansing, Michigan. I attended every Mediawest, from 1988 to very recently (I think 1999 or 2000 was probably the last one I went to). At cons, and in paper fanzines I use my legal name (the pen-name is much more recent, I needed one to post my fanfiction to FanFic.Net, it's required).
Besides MediaWestCon, I was very active in media fandom in the late 1980's and early 1990s, especially British Television fandom, including Doctor Who and Blake's 7. I attended the last of the legendary Scorpio conventions, held in Chicago. I also attended, the following conventions:
Brits in Space - St. Louis, Missouri
Soma Con - Chicago, Illinois
Sandbagger One - New Jersey (I forget the name of the darn city, but it's just outside of Philadelphia)
Toronto Trek - several of them, in guess where? Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Several Babel Cons in Grand Rapids, Michigan
Grand Con, Grand Rapids, Michigan
Confusion, Detroit, Michigan (a couple of them)
Mad Media, Madison, Wisconsin
Gen-con (gaming) Milwaukee, Wisconsin
I began writing for paper fanzines, with my first story being "Glass Fantasies" in Curses, Foiled Again, edited by Susan M. Garrett in 1992.
I'm actually not sure when I started pubbing on-line (I can never remember dates) but it was when I was watching The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne in syndication and then on The Sci-Fi Cable Channel, so about the year 1999 or 2000. I joined a discussion list for the series, and then a fiction discussion list for the series, and started by posting stories to the fic list. From there I edited and re-wrote my fics, and posted them to the Archive Website for the list. About a year after that, I opened a Fanfic Net account. Since then, I've published my fiction, on-line at Fan Fiction Net.
Below is my fan fiction bibliography. The on-line stories can be found at www.fanfiction.net, unless noted, by searching under my pen name Olivia Sutton (with a space, not an underscore).
